First Look at Suicide Death Statistics for 2023

The National Institute of Statistics publishes today, June 26, data according cause of death

The National Institute of Statistics (INE) has published today the provisional data acoording cause of death for the year 2023.

For the first time after an upward trend since 2018, the number of deaths by suicide has decreased by 6.5%, from 4,227 deaths in 2022 to 3,952 in 2023.

Thus, suicide deaths in Spain rank as the second leading cause of external death, surpassed only by accidental falls.

Considering deaths by gender, 2,952 men and 1,275 women died from this cause.

Despite being a positive figure, it should not lead to a false sense of security. First, it is important to remember that these are provisional data that could change in the coming months. Second, Spain continues to have an unacceptably high number of deaths by suicide.

Despite the improvement in these figures, it is still necessary to implement strong national actions to achieve an even greater reduction, in addition to maintaining the initiatives already available. The only acceptable number of suicide deaths is 0, and we must continue working towards this goal.
