Galicia surpassed both national and European suicide prevalence rates in 2021

Men and the 51-60 age group were the main victims of suicide.

Worrying data on suicide figures in Galician population are thrown by the Institute of Legal Medicine of Galicia (Imelga) in their latest report, whose main job is to analyze the violent deaths occurred in this territory.

This report collects suicide rates and their evolution from 2012 to 2021, and in addition to analyzing the differences in suicide figures according to sex and age, it explores the statistics on the methods that were used as well.

In the course of 2020, the main risk factors were age, being between 51 and 60 years old, and gender, being male. Moreover, it was observed that the most  used method was hanging at home.

This type of data collection is essential to know the main victims of suicide, as well as to promote evidence-based prevention actions.
