The new suicide prevention unit at the Burgos University Hospital began providing services this October.
In order to respond to requests for help from the population of this province, the unit has a psychiatrist, a psychologist and a Mental Health nurse. This multidisciplinary team, which works full time, three days a week, is coordinated with the primary care system, so that its main objective of attending anyone who presents suicidal ideation or behavior within 72 hours can be effectively achieved.
According to the latest data from the National Statistics Institute (INE) from 2020, Burgos had a suicide rate of 8.72 (per 100 000 inhabitants) with a total of 31 cases. There was a higher rate of women who died by suicide (12.89), compared to men (4.51) and the population over 64 years of age, was the one with the highest risk of committing a suicidal act (16 cases), compared to the other age groups.
This suicide prevention unit joins other territorial initiatives to try to reduce the number of suicides in our country.
